David MC FARLANE

I remember when i met Macca for the first time. It was after he finished the Giro d'Italia in 1984. I went for a beer with Gary Wiggins in Ghent. In the "Waterhuis aan de bierkant", THE place to be in that time we found Macca sitting at the bar with Leon and Lois Watchorn. David was, compared to Gary, a very shy guy. Later i found out that he was just a calm man and not that shy at all. He stayed in Belgium for the rest of the season.
In 1985, when i went to Australia for the first time (a 4 weeks holiday trip) David picked me up at the airport. Silly me, after a few km's on the road, asked how it came i hadn't seen a roo yet.
So Macca took me to Melbourne Zoo for a 3 hour walk around the park. I just had a 30 hours journey from Belgium behind me.
I finally arrived in Leongatha where his mum and dad welcomed me. The very next morning, my first Australian breacky! Toast (we knew that too in Belgium) and waaaaaa they have Nutella too. What a mistake!!! i putted 2 inches of Nutella on my toast, had a bite, first didn't know what happened, second everybody laughing their heads off, finally i spitted out my toast! They we're trying to poison me. I took the jug: VEGEMITE !!! I must admit that since that trip i still eat that stuff in Belgium.
the rider:
In 1975 David became U16 state champion and won the silver medal at the Australion U16 road championship. As an amateur he was two times Victorian road champion. David came to Europe a few times to ride the "kermesses" and criteriums. Twice he made the Australian selection for the Worlds (86-Colorado Springs (road and track) and 87-Villach (road)).
Abroad he won the Tour of Tahiti.
In Australia he won severall races on the road including 9 times the Gippsland 3 day Tour, stages in the Sun Tour (3) and Griffin Tour (2). Macca started 11 times in the Sun Tour and finished all af them!
The Australian Roadtitle in 1992 was his most prestigious win. He beated Gavin Parsonage and Tim Jamieson for the gold medal in Warrnambool.
On the track he won the Victorian 50 km pointstitle and only Gary Sutton could beat him for the gold medal at the Australian pointsrace championship in 1986.
Today David still rides mountainbike races. He recently finished the 100km Otway Odyssey. David and his wife Maree got two sportif sons.
And yes they ride a bike, Jordan and Thomas Mc Farlane, names for the future??

Leongatha cycling Carnival

Leongatha, Victoria. The largest commercial centre in South Gippsland.
The town is 133 km south east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland highway.
About 5000 people live in this small town.
Its the home town for former professionals as David Mc Farlane (pro 1984-1994), Terry Watchorn (pro 1954) and John Sauvarin. (pro 1987-1992, who died in April 2006)
The city has an outdoor cycling track. Every year since 1979 the Leongatha Cycling Club organized the Leongatha Cycling Carnival. Twice i was the guest (togheter with my wife Lieve) of the Watchorn family at the time the carnival was on, February 2004 and March 2007.
For Terry and Gwenda Watchorn its a real hectic period. From the search for sponsors, hanging up banners throughout the town, sweeping the track (with the local fire-bigade) and negotiating the contracts with the riders! Even their house becomes a temporarily hotel. In 2004 we spend our days at the Watchorns together with the Meares sisters, Nathan Clarke, Darren Young etc...
What you need when you organize an outdoor event is .....nice weather. You'll say, no problem in Australia and that is most of the time correct. The two times i was there it was more then 35° C.
And that is hot! But unfortunately when it is that hot, you get big thunderstorms and haivy rains. That is what happened in 1999, 2005 and 2006.
Despite the big efforts of some of the clubmembers, the funds for the 2008 edition where not found. A very big disappointment for Terry.
When you look at the honour roll of the different races over the years you find names of Stephen Pate, David Mc Farlane , Shane Kelly and Gary Neiwand.

Gary Wiggins

My first message is a very sad one, cause my good friend Gary Wiggins died last friday, 25th of January in a hospital in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.
This man that i met the first time at the Ghent 6 back in the early 80's became one of my best friends ever. He was the reason for my neverending interest in the wonderfull country of Australia. He talked me in to it. He made me going on holiday to Melbourne in 1985. Since then i would go back as much as i can. He introduced me into the cycling world. He "dropped" the first Aussies at my house to stay for a few days. (they ended staying the season, lol).
I went to several races with Gary, in Belgium, Holland, England, Germany. We had great times drinking a few beers now and then.
But on top of that he was a great rider. He won the Bremen 6, he was European Madison champion, he won stages in the Griffin tour and he won Belgian kermesses.
Unfortunatly he had also bad luck, specially last thursday when somebody bashed him on the head, or hit him with a car. Police still try to figure out what really happened.
He was also proud of his son, Bradley.
We saw eachother last a few years ago. Gary, we will miss you!

Australian cycling

I've been several times to Australia to visit good old friends that used to be bikeriders in Europe. Many times i spoke with this people (with a few VB's or MB's) about the Australian cycling history. No one seems to know of any book or site where all names of the former champions, a list of professionals or even results of the most important races are kept for the future. Well, i will try to get as many information on this subject on my blog. All help is welcome!
See how far we can get in the coming weeks, months or even years!
